Hawthorn Bush - Neighbours Foundations for New Extension

Been told by my neighbour (Spurs fan !!!) that unless we removed the hawthorn bush at the end of our patio, the foundations on their new extension will have to be dug down to 8 feet.
I told him I dont want to removed the bush (abount 8 feet high by 8 feet wide) as it provides some privacy when sitting on the patio.
When we had our extension nothing was mentioned on our plans or by the builder etc.
The bush is about 2.5m from our extension which was built in 2006.
Anyone had any similar problems. One builder I asked about this just laughed.
I will keep the bush under control but dont want to remove it.

Sissons, if I was in your position I would sit absolutely tight and not play ball at all. It's your house and your land so you can do as you legally like.
An acquaintance of mine was in a similar position to you. He complied with his neighbour's wishes [ wanting to be a good neighbour himself ] and subjected himself and his family having their garden disrupted and two fruit trees removed to facilitate a massive F O rear extension. Within months of it being completed his "grateful" neighbours had sold up and moved on.

If your property is built off clay subsoil then your neighbours builder/building Inspector is correct. Foundation depths are taken for NBC guide 4.2 and hawthorn bushes are known to be one of the worse problems relating to heave and subsidence.
2.5m Sounds about right for a hawthorn Bush.
He shouldn't be going for a raft either. A raft could move about all over the place. The only real this is to dig down 2.5m and also have a suspended floor or piled foundations.
It's going to cost him an extra £3-5k at least.
If I was you I'd get him to pay for them to be removed and replaced with something else. One it keeps your neighbour sweet and two it means the bushes won't fuck up your extension which by the sounds of it is more at risk!

You haven't mentioned if you get on with him or not.
The compromise could be to have him re-plant it a few feet away so that you keep your privacy and he gets his standard depth footings.
That's as reasonable as you need to be, he either pays to have it re-planted or he pays for deeper footings.
We've got a similar thing going on - our neighbour has planning permission to extend a single story extension a further 2 meters down the garden, which runs past an apple tree in our garden and a few bushes.
They've offered to removed the apple tree, grind out the stump and replace it further away with a sapling of my choice. I'm happy to do it because the apple tree cuts out lots of light and drops loads of apples every year.

In fact I am staggered by the unmitigated gall of your neighbour, don't even oblige him with any kind of answer.

Never heard of anyone having to dig that deep other than for soil conditions. In any event it will just cost him a bit more in labour and concrete for the footing.
Sounds like a nice, established hedge. I'd tell the cheeky cunt to fuck right off. The hedge was there a long time before he fancied his extension.
